These exams are thorough and typically last for about half an hour. We recommend that these exams be conducted annually, with twice a year physical examinations starting at age 7.
For the first year, we recommend baseline blood work and urinalysis. For the second year, we suggest baseline blood pressure, electrocardiogram, and chest radiographs. Starting from the third year, we recommend repeating the same program. As an owner, you can choose the level of preventative care you would like for your pet.
Here are some reasons why wellness care is important for exotic pets and birds:
Prevention is key: Regular wellness exams can help detect early signs of disease or infection, such as dental problems or respiratory issues. Early detection and treatment can prevent these issues from becoming more severe and costly.
Vaccinations: Regular vaccinations are important for exotic pets and birds to protect them against common diseases.
Parasite prevention: Parasites can cause serious health problems for your pets and family. Regular wellness care can ensure that your pets are protected against these pests and the diseases they carry.
Nutrition and diet: A healthy diet is essential for your pet’s overall health and well-being. During wellness exams, your veterinarian can provide guidance on the best nutrition and feeding practices for your pet.
Behavioral issues: Regular wellness exams can also address any behavioral issues your pet may be experiencing, such as anxiety or aggression. Your veterinarian can provide advice and treatment options to help your pet live a happy and stress-free life.
It is recommended that exotic pets and birds receive wellness exams at least once a year, although more frequent visits may be necessary for senior pets or those with ongoing health issues. By staying on top of your pet’s wellness care, you can help prevent disease and ensure that your exotic pet or bird lives a long, healthy, and happy life.
