Avian Medicine and Surgery

At Kersting Veterinary Hospital, we provide comprehensive avian medicine and surgery services for our feathered friends.

Our highly trained staff is experienced in diagnosing and treating a wide range of avian health conditions, from simple infections to complex medical cases.

Our avian services include annual wellness exams, diagnostics, treatment, and surgery. We also offer specialized care for sick and injured birds, as well as nutritional and behavioral counseling.

Our state-of-the-art surgical suite is equipped with advanced technology to ensure the safest and most effective surgical procedures for birds. We use Sevoflurane anesthesia, which is actively scavenged from the patient and staff and vented outdoors for environmental safety. This type of anesthesia is commonly used in pediatrics and human medicine, and is safe and effective for birds.

During surgery, we use a variety of monitors to ensure the safety and success of the procedure. We actively breathe for the patient every six seconds and supplement their oxygen levels to increase the survivability of small patients. We also utilize a warm water circulating heating pad under the surgical patient and surround them with a Bear Hugger to maintain body temperature and increase the likelihood of a successful recovery.

In addition to our surgical capabilities, we offer comprehensive medical care for birds, including diagnostic services such as radiology, ultrasound, and laboratory testing. We also provide nutritional counseling, as diet plays a critical role in the health and wellbeing of birds.
